My name is Dean
Snow, and for eight years I was the Scoutmaster of Troop 97, in Homewood Alabama. During my tenure as SM,
the troop grew from less than 20 active members to over 90, and during this time we produced 47 Eagles.
I say this not as a prideful display of arrogance, but as an illustration of what a well run Scout Troop can accomplish when
staffed with trained leaders and then follows the BSA model.
The memories
I have of those years pale in comparison to those of my three sons (each an Eagle) and anyone of the hundreds of scouts that
came into our troop as children and left as young men. What lessons we all learned, and what memories we now share
with each other. Your unit is no different! Do not discount the powerful influence we have as leaders in developing
character in our scouts. This character comes from playing the "game of Scouting". Playing this game
is what every boy remembers.
Seven years ago I was honored by the family of my old Scoutmaster, A.D. Roper, when they gave me his copy of
the official troop photograph taken in 1964, the year I joined Troop 97. That picture is featured on our home
page.
Upon studying the image, I soon realized that while I vividly remember each person
in the photo, I could only recollect the first names of most, full names of a few, and had no idea of the others.
It dawned on me that this type of photograph (a simple group shot) is what my entire tenure as Scoutmaster will
be documented from.
Then I remembered my time at college where my fraternity memorialized every school year in a composite photo which
featured each member, and his full name. No loss of memory here, everyone's name is featured, which
unlocked fading memories and happy thoughts of those years together.
Scout Shots will employee only Scouters! The business plan calls
for Eagle Scouts who are enrolled in colleges placed around the Districts to be employed by Scout Shots to take the actual
photographs, and send them to our office, where they will be manipulated into individual composites. We
will employee Eagles to take the photographs and retired or semi-retired adult Scouters to create the digital composites.
We took
our first photographs in October of 2009, and within 45 days, we had completed nine units, photographing nearly
800 individual scouts and leaders. This is an honest and true indication of the value this product offers the family
of each scout in your unit. We are working opening with the Greater Alabama Council and have permission to contact
every unit within this council.
Please allow me to fully explain this program, how it works,
and how it can benefit your unit. From the generous rebate program to the permanent composite for your Scoutroom,
we are committed to doing our best to make you a satisfied customer. I know that your unit will be receive this program
approvingly, and it will be the start of an ongoing relationship.
Sincerely,
Dean Snow
